Most gardeners plant first and prep second. It's why September looks brilliant and November looks tired.
The best spring gardens in Australia are the ones where the soil was made ready before the seeds went in. Not fertilised on the day. Prepared. Rehydrated after winter. Fed. Mulched. Then planted into a bed that's already alive and waiting.
This is a seven-step guide to preparing your garden soil for spring. Do all seven and your beds will spend the season compounding on themselves. Skip the prep and you'll be chasing top-ups every fortnight from October onward.
When to start
Spring hits Australia at different times.
- Cool and temperate (Melbourne, Adelaide, Tas, ACT): start prep in early September. Plant from mid-September once frost risk has passed.
- Subtropical (Brisbane, northern NSW): start prep in mid-August. Plant from late August or early September.
- Tropical (Darwin, Cairns): the tropical dry season is your main growing window. Prep is done at the start of dry, around May.
- Arid and semi-arid: prep aligns with rainfall rather than a fixed month. Start prep after the first substantial rain of the growing season.
If in doubt, start prep four to six weeks before your usual first planting date. The extra time lets biology establish before roots need it.
The seven-step spring prep
Step 1: Clear and tidy
Remove weeds, spent plants, dead leaves, and any surface debris left over from summer or winter. Pull weeds by hand before they seed. Cut back perennials that need it.
The goal isn't a bare bed. It's a bed you can see and work with. Leave any healthy mulch layer in place if it's still doing its job. Only remove mulch that's gone slimy, mouldy, or matted into a water-repellent crust.
Compost anything green and disease-free. Bin anything that carried disease over from last season. Don't compost tomato foliage if you had blight.
Step 2: Assess the soil
Before you add anything, read what's already there. Five minutes with your hands and a trowel will tell you what the bed actually needs.
Look at the colour. Smell it. Squeeze a handful. Dig 15 to 20 cm and count earthworms in a few different spots. Pour a cup of water on the surface and time how long it takes to soak in.

A bed that scores well is ready for a light feed and mulch. A bed that scores poorly needs a heavier reset. Same steps below, different doses.
Step 3: Rehydrate slowly
Winter dries out soil more than most gardeners realise, especially in beds that were left uncovered. Cold air pulls moisture up out of soil in the same way it dries laundry.
Before you feed or plant, water the bed deeply and slowly over two or three days. Not a quick surface splash. A proper soak that reaches 20 to 30 cm down. If water pools on top and won't soak in, that's a sign the soil has gone hydrophobic (water-repellent), which is common after a dry winter.
For hydrophobic soil, a fork through the top 10 cm helps water penetrate. So does mixing a small amount of organic matter into the surface. The biology in worm castings also helps break down the waxy coating that causes hydrophobicity in the first place, but that's a slow fix rather than an instant one.
Step 4: Apply a soil conditioner
This is the compounding step. Everything before this was setup. Everything after this depends on it.
Sprinkle a small handful of worm castings around the base of each existing plant. For empty beds you're about to plant, work a couple of handfuls per square metre into the top 5 cm of soil. Don't dig deep. The roots and the water will carry the biology down.

Water in gently after applying. The biology needs moisture to get moving.
Step 5: Top with mulch
A 5 to 7 cm layer of organic mulch across the whole bed. Lucerne, sugar cane, pea straw, or fine wood chip on paths and around trees.
Mulch does three jobs at once. It protects the biology you just added by keeping the soil temperature stable and moisture even. It slowly feeds the soil as it breaks down. And it suppresses weeds so you're not fighting them through the growing season.
Leave a small gap around the stems of established plants. Mulch pushed up against a stem can rot it. Fingers-width clearance is enough.
Step 6: Plan planting for the soil you have
Match the plants to the state of the soil, not the state you wish it was in.
If the soil is coming back from a rough winter, don't push it with the heaviest feeders (tomatoes, corn, brassicas planted very densely) in the first spring after a reset. Start with medium-feeders (beans, lettuce, herbs, silverbeet) that will thrive without stripping the bed. The biology has one to two months to build up before it can support the heavy hitters.
If the soil scored well in the assessment, you can go straight to the heavy feeders.
Step 7: First light watering and observation
Once seeds or seedlings are in, water lightly and often for the first week. Enough to keep the top 5 cm evenly moist. Not enough to waterlog the roots.
Then step back. Watch the bed for the first two weeks. Note where water pools, where plants struggle, where growth is strong. Spring gives you clear feedback fast, and the beds that get watched are the ones that get better every season.
Common spring prep mistakes
Worth flagging, because most of these look sensible in the moment.
- Digging too deep. Turning over the soil breaks up the fungal networks and worm channels you're trying to protect. Work in the top 5 to 10 cm only. Leave the rest alone.
- Planting into cold, wet soil. Roots rot. Wait until soil temperature is above about 12°C in most zones.
- Skipping the assessment. Feeding a bed that didn't need it wastes input. Not feeding a bed that did need it wastes the season.
- Applying synthetic fertiliser as the "prep" step. The salt dose damages the biology you're trying to build up. If you must use one, use it later as a targeted supplement, not as the base.
- Mulching over dry soil. Mulch locks in moisture but also locks out water if the soil is bone dry. Water the bed properly before you mulch it.
What to expect
Done properly, a spring-prepped bed looks like this over the season.
- Weeks 1 to 2: slow start above ground. Seedlings establishing. The biology is doing the invisible work underneath.
- Weeks 2 to 6: noticeable growth push. Plants that were sluggish start filling out. Lawn colour evens up. Water use drops.
- Beyond week 6: the compounding kicks in. Beds get better without further intervention. Water goes further. Pests are less aggressive because plants are less stressed.
By mid-November, a well-prepped bed is running on the biology you set up in September. That's the whole point of prep.
